Discover Bentota

Bentota is one of Sri Lanka’s classic beach destinations, where a long stretch of golden sand meets the mouth of the Bentota River. Graceful resorts and boutique villas line the shore, many of them shaded by old frangipani and coconut palms, and the calm waters of the river lagoon are ideal for paddleboarding, kayaking and other water sports.

Days here are deliberately unhurried. Mornings might bring a walk along the sand as fishermen haul in their nets, followed by a swim and a long lunch. In the afternoon, a river cruise glides upstream through mangroves, where monitor lizards bask on the banks, kingfishers flash past and small temples appear among the trees. Evenings belong to sunsets over the Indian Ocean and dinners of fresh seafood.

Bentota also has a quiet cultural side. Lunuganga, the country estate of celebrated architect Geoffrey Bawa, is a beautiful landscape of terraces, follies and lake views, and his brother Bevis Bawa’s Brief Garden lies a short drive inland. Further south, turtle conservation projects around Kosgoda and a boat trip on the Madu River near Balapitiya make easy half-day outings.

Because it lies within easy reach of Colombo and the airport, Bentota is a favourite place to unwind for a few days at the end of a journey, after the Cultural Triangle and the hill country. It also pairs well with Galle and Hikkaduwa further down the coast.

Questions

Bentota FAQs

Is Bentota a good place to end a tour?

Yes. Bentota is around two hours from the airport, so it is a favourite place to unwind for a few days before flying home, without a long final transfer.

Which water sports are available in Bentota?

Popular options include jet-skiing, windsurfing, kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling, depending on the season and conditions. The river lagoon is usually calmer than the open sea.

Can I visit Lunuganga?

Yes. The estate is open for guided tours of the gardens, and it is also possible to stay overnight. Opening times can vary, so we check before planning your visit.

Are the turtle hatcheries ethical?

Practices vary between projects. We prefer conservation-focused hatcheries that release hatchlings promptly and avoid unnecessary handling, and we are happy to talk through the options.

Is the sea safe for swimming?

From November to April the sea is often calm enough for swimming, though currents can be strong. Always follow local advice and swim near your hotel where conditions are known.
