Discover Mirissa

Mirissa is a crescent of golden sand near Sri Lanka’s southern tip, backed by coconut palms and relaxed beachfront cafés. It has the easy charm of a fishing village that has grown into a beach town, with outrigger boats in the harbour, fresh seafood grilled on the sand each evening and a gentle swell rolling into the bay.

From roughly November to April, boats set out from the harbour in the early morning in search of blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins in the deep water offshore. The continental shelf drops away steeply here, bringing great whales unusually close to the coast. We favour responsible operators who keep a respectful distance, and we always suggest keeping a spare morning in case the sea is rough.

On land, days drift by pleasantly. Coconut Tree Hill and Parrot Rock are lovely at sunset, quieter coves such as Secret Beach invite a morning swim when the sea is calm, and neighbouring Weligama is ideal for a first surf lesson. Further along the coast, Tangalle offers long, wild beaches and secluded villas, while the stilt fishermen near Koggala make an evocative early-morning stop.

Mirissa sits only a short drive from Galle Fort, so it combines easily with history, boutique shopping and dining. It is a natural place to end a journey after the hill country and a safari at Yala or Udawalawe.

Is Mirissa good for swimming?

In the calm season the main bay is lovely for swimming. Always follow local advice and flags, as currents can be strong, particularly during the south-west monsoon.

Trips last several hours and the sea can be choppy, so they suit children who are comfortable on boats. Seasickness remedies are worth bringing for all ages.
