Discover Ella

Ella is a laid-back mountain village cradled by tea gardens, forested gorges and dramatic viewpoints, with the Ella Gap opening towards the southern plains far below. Its most famous landmark, the Nine Arch Bridge at Demodara, curves through the jungle on graceful stone arches, and watching a blue train glide across it is one of Sri Lanka’s most memorable moments.

Mornings here are made for walking. An easy path through tea bushes leads to the summit of Little Adam’s Peak, glorious at sunrise, while more energetic guests can tackle Ella Rock with a local guide for a sweeping panorama of the valley. Afterwards there is time for a long breakfast, a tea-estate visit or a cooking class with a village family, and in the afternoon Ravana Falls makes a refreshing stop beside the road.

Further afield, Lipton’s Seat near Haputale looks out across a vast sea of tea, and the cave temple at Rawana Ella and the quiet estates of the Uva hills reward slower exploration. Ella’s own village strip is lively in the evenings, though many of the most beautiful stays sit just outside, on hillsides with views across the gap.

Many travellers arrive on the celebrated hill-country railway from Kandy or Nanu Oya, a journey through tea plantations, tunnels and cloud-wrapped peaks. From Ella, the road descends to Yala and Udawalawe for safari, then on to the beaches of the south coast, which makes it a natural turning point in a private journey.

Questions

Ella FAQs

When do trains cross the Nine Arch Bridge?

Several trains cross each day, but timetables change and delays are common. Your driver-guide will check the latest times so you can be at the viewpoint when one passes.

Is the Kandy to Ella train worth it?

For many guests it is a highlight of their trip. The full journey is long, so some prefer to ride the most scenic section between Nanu Oya and Ella and continue by car.

Can you reserve train seats?

Reserved seats are released in limited numbers and sell quickly. We will try to secure them for your dates, but availability is never certain, so we always have a comfortable road option ready.

How hard is the Ella Rock hike?

It is a moderate walk of roughly three to four hours return, with some steep, uneven sections. Little Adam’s Peak is far easier, taking around an hour there and back.

Can I combine Ella with a safari?

Yes. Yala and Udawalawe are both roughly two to three hours’ drive from Ella, so many guests continue to a safari lodge after their stay.
