Discover Kandy
Kandy was the seat of Sri Lanka’s final kingdom and remains its spiritual and cultural heart. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, with its golden-roofed shrine and moat, stands beside Kandy Lake, and every day pilgrims arrive with lotus flowers and jasmine while drummers announce the rituals. The city around it climbs gently into wooded hills dotted with colonial bungalows and quiet viewpoints.
A day in Kandy has a gentle rhythm. Mornings might begin with a walk around the lake before the traffic stirs, followed by a visit to the temple to coincide with one of the daily ceremonies. Later, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya offer avenues of palms, a celebrated orchid house and giant bamboo, and evenings can bring a performance of Kandyan dance, with its whirling costumes and fire-walking finale.
The surrounding valleys reward curiosity. Spice gardens, batik and brass workshops, and the forest paths of Udawattakele are all close by, while the drive to the hill country passes some of the earliest tea estates on the island. Kandy is especially magical during the Esala Perahera, usually held in July or August, when costumed dancers, drummers and elephants fill the streets over several nights.
In a private journey, Kandy is the hinge between the ancient cities and the tea country. Many guests arrive from Sigiriya or Dambulla, spend two nights here, then board the famous scenic railway towards Nuwara Eliya and Ella.
