Sri Lanka Safari and Wildlife Journeys

Leopards, elephants, whales and birdlife.

Create My Journey

Sri Lanka is one of the most rewarding places in Asia for wildlife. In a single journey you might watch elephants at a waterhole, scan the rocks of Yala for a leopard and head out to sea in search of whales. Nature keeps its own timetable, so sightings are never guaranteed, but the anticipation is part of the magic.

Away from the famous parks, forests, lakes and reefs are home to colourful birds, monkeys, crocodiles and turtles. We plan a Sri Lanka safari around the seasons and suggest guides and operators who follow park rules and respect the animals.

Where wildlife & safari shine

Sri Lanka

Leopards and elephants

Yala is famous for its leopards and sloth bears, while Udawalawe is known for its elephant herds. Early morning and late afternoon drives offer the best chances, and a patient guide makes all the difference.

Whales off the south and east coasts

Mirissa is a popular base for whale watching, generally in the drier months of the south coast season. On the east coast, Trincomalee has its own season at a different time of year. Sightings vary, and we choose operators who keep a respectful distance.

Wildlife among the ruins

The forests and reservoirs around Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa are rich in birdlife, and troops of monkeys often watch visitors from the ancient walls. An early walk with a naturalist adds a different dimension to the Cultural Triangle.

Reefs and turtles

Hikkaduwa’s reef and the clear water around Pasikuda in season offer gentle snorkelling, and turtles are sometimes seen close to shore. Conditions change with the monsoons, so we match the coast to your dates.

Questions

Wildlife & safari: good to know

Will we definitely see a leopard?

No sighting can be guaranteed. Yala gives you a good chance, especially with patient drives at the right times of day, but wildlife is unpredictable.

When is the best time for safaris in Sri Lanka?

Parks can be visited for much of the year, though some, including parts of Yala, may close for a period during the dry season. We check the latest information for your dates.

Is whale watching ethical?

We aim to suggest operators who follow responsible guidelines, keep a respectful distance and limit time near the animals. If you have concerns, tell us and we will discuss alternatives.

Can we combine a safari with time at the beach?

Yes. Yala and Udawalawe sit within easy reach of the south coast, so many guests follow a few nights on safari with slow days by the sea.
